Every time I purged packages from previous try and rebooted afterwards. Wicd might be worth a try; I prefer it to gnome-network-manager myself.

So I plugged my laptop into my router and I got internet then tried to install the driver again. On one of my computers, simply installing wicd was enough to wake up the Broadcom chip, bradcom I can’t remember what chipset it was using and can’t access it right now.
To any newbies like me attempting to just copy and paste the above code. I certainly don’t know all the answers–I’m basically an advanced hobbyist–but if I can help someone farther down the road, I’m happy.
